PART I. Build the mask. Open a new picture (200 x 200) with a black background and colors set to 16 million. Set foreground color to white. Using "Flood Fill" and "Sunburst Gradient" set at (0,0), paint the image. |
| Resample the image and increase one dimension by Pi (one side + (same side divided by 3.14)). When you put the numbers in the resample window you must uncheck "Maintain Aspect Ratio". For this size image, it needed resampling to (200 x 266), 266 being (200 + (200 / 3.14)). |
|
Rotate the image 45 degrees [image > rotate > 45 right].
Use the "Selection Tool" set to [circle, feather = 0] and starting at about (60 x 60) select a circle. A differently sized initial image would require a different starting point. A rule is the black area should be a sixth as wide as the circle. We'll add feather when we apply the drop to a background. |
|
Adjust the "Brightness/Contrast" [colors > adjust > brightness/contrast] (brightness = -10%, contrast = 35%). Copy the selection [image > copy] and paste as a new image [image > paste > as new image]. |
| Build the highlight. An oval rotated 45 degrees with some feather will do the highlight, but here's a better way. Open a new image and repeat steps 1 and 2. Adjust the images brightness by -5% and it's contrast by 30%. Rotate the oval 45 degrees. Use the magic wand and select the black around the oval and then invert the selection. Click and drag the oval to the lower right corner (not to close). Apply "Circle Deformation". Copy the selection to the clip board [image > copy]. |
| Return to the drop image and paste the oval into the image [edit > paste > as a new selection]. Position it about a sixth of the way in. Deselect [selection > select none]. Save the image as "drop.tga". We do this so that later we can resample it for different size drops. For this tutorial we'll be using this size drop. |

PART II. Using the mask. Open a new picture (200 x 200) [16 million colors] and paint it with your favorite texture. Increase the image's contrast by 15%. Add "drop.tga" as a mask [masks > new > from image] then invert it [masks > invert]. Paint the image with black using "Flood Fill" [solid color, tolerance = 200]. Select the highlight with the "Magic Wand" [tolerance = 20, feather = 10] and press the "Delete" key 2 or 3 times. |
| Select the drop out using the "Selection Tool" [circle, feather=1]. Start selecting at (1 x 1) and finish 1 pixel away from the bottom right. This will feather or ani-alias our edge to the background. Copy it to the clip board [edit > copy]. |
| Open a new picture (300 x 300) [16 million colors] and paint it with the same texture. Paste in the drop as a new selection and position to taste. Before you deselect, add a little "Punch Deformation" if you like at this point. I didn't use any on this image, but it does seem to do some good. Shown image was resampled down to (200 x 200).
