Open a new image, in this case a 200 x 200 to match the Kit tutorial.
We'll be building a mask of a mountain and then using it in the sky image from the kit. First, draw a mountain shape using the "lasso" tool (feather=0). Start on the left side and draw (left mouse button held) to the right. Once you reach the right side continue to hold the left mouse button down and allow your lasso to leave the image window, go around the bottom of the image and back around to the left but below where you started. Let go of the left mouse button. |
|
Now we'll highlight the top edge. Feather the selection (+4) [selections > modify > feather].
With background color set to white (255, 255, 255) clear the selection [edit > clear].
Change background color to black (0, 0, 0) clear the selection [edit > clear].
Repeat for more highlighting. I did it twice.
Note: The next step may take a little practice. I recommend saving your selection [selections > save] so that you can get a fresh copy up quickly. Copied images don't retain selection information (bummer). Now make some copies of the current image and load the saved selection [selections > load] into each one of them. |
| Now for some texture. Use the "air brush" tool set to [size=100, round, opacity=80, paper=Marsh] and spray across the selection quickly. It's better to move fast for more clarity of texture. Try putting some shadow on the right (opposite the moon shine) by not painting it so much. Also you can use the "retouch " tool with mode set to "darken" and darken the right side. This mountain, drawn for the tutorial, came out different then the original, but that's the way of it. Your's will be different as well. |

The last part of this step is to get it into our "kit" image. Select the "kit" image by clicking it (make it blue framed). Load in the mountain image as a mask [masks > new > from image]. Pick your mountain image from the drop down list. Insure "source luminance" is checked and "invert mask data" is not checked. Click OK. You will not see the mask unless you choose to view it (not necessary). To see things through a mask, we must paint it. Change foreground color to white. Use the "flood fill" tool set to "solid color" and tolerance all the way up (200) and paint anywhere on the image. If nothing happens check "Tolerance". It must be set to 200.
Note: If you are doing the kit tutorial, here's the last step . |
