Open an image, in this case, "Grass" from the Kit tutorial.
We'll be using a mask for the sky but linear gradient would work as well here because we are only using 2 colors.
The sky mask allows multicolored gradients and will be demonstrated in a new upcoming tutorial.
First, use the "magic wand" set to (tolerance=40, feather=0) and left click the blue area to select it. With just the sky selected the grass will not get messed up when we paint. |
|
With background color set to black (0 ,0 ,0) clear the selection (edit-clear). Change foreground color to blue (0, 0, 255). |
|
If you haven't already, download the sky mask and unzip it into your favorite directory. Once you have it and with the sky still selected, load the mask in (masks-load-"sky.msk"). You will not see the mask unless you choose to view it (not necessary). Your foreground and background should already be set. Paint (left click) the selection using the "flood fill" tool set to (tolerance=200, solid color). A lesser tolerance will not get through the mask properly. If you want to use "flood fill linear gradient" rather then the mask, set your tolerance to zero. |
|
The last step is reduce the "banding effect" made by the gradient mask or flood fill gradient.
With the sky still selected, goto (colors-adjust-brightness/contrast). Increase color contrast (+30) and decrease brightness (-10).
The jpegs shown here do not show how well this works. You can see the difference between step 3 and step 4, but it'll look better in PSP.
Note: If you are doing the kit tutorial, leave the sky selected for the next step . |
