PAINT SHOP PRO TUTORIAL "Watermark"

This tutorial uses masks!

Start with any graphic in 16 million colors. This one was 408x281.

Open a new pic at 408x100, and insert your text. Choose a font that's nice and "thick" (I'm using Bobo at 80 pts). Choose white for the background color and black for the foreground. Make sure anit-alias is checked. Right-click to de-select.
Your graphic should look like this:

Now, goto "image">"Special Filters">"Emboss>. Make a copy of this and paste as new image.
Your graphics should look like this:

Now, for the interesting part, you need to make two images to use as masks. The first is made by painting the grey parts black with "Tolerance" set to 0, just the large blocks of grey. Don't paint the greys that are used for anti-aliasing.
Your graphic should look like this:

The second image is made by painting the grey parts of the second "Embossed" image white, with "Tolerance" set to 0. The anti-aliasing greys are easier to see here.
Your graphic should look like this:

Make your original graphic "active", goto "Masks">"New">"From Image". Choose the first mask as the source, "Create mask from" check "Source luminance", and un-check "Invert mask". Under "File">"Preferences">"General Program Preferences">"Misc" you can set how you see the mask, I prefer the "50% red" setting. Then, to see the mask goto "View">""Thru Mask". It isn't necessary to see the mask for it to do it's job.

Now, goto "Colors">"Adjust">"Brightness/Contrast">, enter in 50% for "Brightness" and 0% for "Contrast". What just happened is where the mask is white the "Brightness" is increased 50% but where the mask is black there is no effect.
Your graphic should look like this:

Go back to "Masks">"Delete". Then "Masks">"New">"From Image" Choose the second mask as the source, "Create mask from" check "Source luminance", and check "Invert mask". This time since the mask is inverted, where the mask is black the "Brightness" is decreased 50% but where the mask is white there is no effect.

Now, goto "Colors">"Adjust">"Brightness/Contrast">, enter in -50% for "Brightness" and 0% for "Contrast".
Your graphic should look like this:

Any bold two color graphic should do well as a mask for this technique. Enjoy!
