This tutorial uses Masks and Layers! We'll build a mask first. Start with a graphic in 16 million colors. This one was 200x250. With white for the foreground color and black as background click on the paint bucket, choose "RGB Match", "Tolerance" = 200,"Fill Style" = "Linear Gradient". Click on the "Options" button, choose a "Direction" of 90 degrees. Left Click on image to paint. |
Click on the "Shape Selection Tool" button, choose "Selection Type" = Rectangle and "Feather" = 0. Starting in the upper left corner, select a rectangle that's 125x250. Copy the selection and paste as a new image. Goto "Image">"Mirror". Copy again. |
Make the first image the active one and goto "Image">"Add Borders" add 125 to the left side.
Paste the second image into the first aligning it the left side. You may have seen something
similar before but I never liked them because all of them had the light dead center.
Kinda boring. Now goto, "Masks">"New">"From Image">"This Window", "Create Mask From" check "Source Luminance", and check "Invert Mask Data". Now save your mask by going to "Masks">"Save". To save yourself the trouble of building this mask you can download one I built, Pipe Mask. |
Now, for the fun part, open a new image at 80x320, make several copies to play with. Goto "Masks">"Load" and load your "pipe.msk". Paint it black with tolerance set to 200. Goto "Color">"Grey Scale" then "Color">"Colorize" set "Hue" to "25" and "Saturation" to "180". Goto "Layers">"Merge">"Merge All". Try "Color">"Histogram Functions">"Equalize". |
For colored pipes, Open a new image, Background= Black. Goto "Layers">"New". Load the mask, then paint with a color. Goto "Layers">"Merge">"Merge All". |
For 2-color gradiated pipes, Open a new image, Background= "highlite" color. Load the mask, paint with a darker color. Goto "Layers">"Merge">"Merge All". |
How 'bout some textured pipes? Start with a seamless tile (get some free, Free Textures for PSP). Open a new image, Background= Black. Goto "Layers">"New". Load the mask, click on the Paint Bucket, choose Pattern, click on Options and choose the tile. Goto "Layers">"Merge">"Merge All". Adjust the "Opacity" slider bar to taste. |

Here's some more just for fun! |
