Paint Shop Pro Tutorial "Real Fade to Background"

Picture of Step 1 This is a simple mask tutorial demonstrating a fade effect that is better then the typical "cutout" trick. To start: open your original image and check it's size. Our size was 180 x 120 which is a standard aspect ratio (1:1.5) Saving this mask with this standard aspect ratio will allow the "fading" of ANY image of the the same ratio. It will even work on none standard ratios but not quite as well.
Picture of Step 2 Now, we'll need a mask. Start by opening a new image with background color set to black, colors set to 16 million. It's size needs to be 32 pixels less on each side than your original image (in our case 148 x 88). Set foreground color to white (R=255, G=255, B=255). Paint with any gradient you can get to work :) and then decrease colors to 16. Insure "optimize" and "nearest color" are checked.
Picture of Step 3 Clear the image to "black" by pressing "Delete" or "Edit-Clear". Click on the background color of your "color swatch". You should see a 16 color gray scale. Click on the darkest color and click "ok". From the top line menu, click "Image" then "Add Borders". Insure "Symmetric" is checked and choose "1" as the border size. Click "ok". Though not noticable, a one pixel border has been added. Repeat this process 16 times, once for each of the 16 colors, darkest to lightest. When you finish it should look like the image on the left. Increase color depth to 256. Your mask is built. Click here to download our masks.
Picture of Step 4 Click on your original image. From the top line menu, click "masks" then "new" then "from image". Select in the "source window" your mask image (don't pick your original image but rather the one you just built). Insure "source luminance" is checked and "invert mask" is not. Click "ok". Paint anywhere on your original with the background color you wish to put the image on (in our case "white"). You "MUST" set paint tolerance to 200. Repeat: You must set your tolerance when painting to it's maximum (200). Optional: Change to another color and repaint with a lower tolerance for added effect. Enjoy!
