Carbon Braided Sleeve One - High Pressure Water Rocket

Purpose: Document the CBS1-HP Water Rocket, launch system, and flight details.

Overview: CBS1 is a high pressure vessel with an extremely large nozzle (80% of the rocket diameter). It is an altitude attempt of 400 meters restricted by the following self-imposed rules. Inclusions and exclusions are examples only.

1. Nothing made out of what is traditionaly thought of as metal may be launched.

Disallowed: metal clips and pins, metal springs, metal nozzles and bulkheads, tomy timers and electronics other than for recording (payload).

Allowed: carbon, plastics, resins, chemicals, wood

2. Nothing that is not scartch built from single components may be launched.

Disallowed: tomy timers, electronics used for deployment, store bought parachute, film canister with lid

Allowed: FTC tube, carban braided sleeve, film canister without lid,

3. Nothing specificly designed for rockets may be launched.

Disallowed: prefabricated nose cones, electronics other than payload, store bought parachute, prefabricated pressure vessel

Allowed: FTC tube, carbon braided sleeve, film canister without lid, scratch built nose cone and parachute

4. The launch must be safe, legal, and enviromentally friendly following a detailed flight plan.

TESTING: Determine how much pressure an FTC with bulkhead can stand w hen covered with a braided carbon sleeve and epoxy laminate. Bulkhead is a 1" PVC cap. The vessel was pressure tested to 600psi 3 times without visible stress. Details
CONSTRUCTION: Display the methods used in building the braided carbon sleeve pressure vessel. Details and show the fiberglass layup for the fins. Details
RECOVERY: 24" Parachure delpoyed by chemical reaction started at flip at apogee. Mockup Chem Device New Check Value Chem Device
LAUNCH SYSTEM: For the holddowns I use ball bearings embedded in pvc ring spilt into thirds. This allows for no ring or lip on the nozzle. The release is a quick release hose clamp attached to a lever. The seal is a double stopper system on a extra long lamp rod. The launch rod is 1/2" PVC pipe over the lamp rod and is only pressurized from the top.
SPECIFICATIONS: Carbon Braided Sleeve (CBS) rocket specifications. These are close to what will be launched this year. View
